History of Villa Precision International

Villa Precision International (VPI) is known around the world as the original developer of Precision Glass Scribing (PGS) and Breaking equipment. Flat Panel Displays (FPD) and many thin-film products use glass substrates and “Array Processing” to manufacture low cost devices.

Fairchild Semiconductor, Inc., of Palo Alto, California, became the first display company to use VPI equipment in the spring of 1977. Fairchild’s production immediately exceeded the longsought goal of 25,000 parts per week. In years following, Fairchild utilized VPI to reach weekly production goals of 250,000, 2,500,000, and eventually 5,000,000 – 25.4 x 13.0mm [1.0 x 0.6”] digital watch displays. VPI Technology reduced digital display assembly labor by forty percent!

News of VPI’s Precision Glass Scribers spread quickly and equipment deliveries were soon back-ordered eleven months. After Break Edge Quality (ABEQ), After Break Dimensional Tolerance (ABDT), production throughput and yields far superior to conventional methods stimulated word-of-mouth advertising. VPI soon commanded a 70% market share worldwide!

In 1989-1990, VPI introduced:

  • 600 x 650mm [24” x 26”] Scribers
  • Scribe Placement Accuracy +0.25mm [0.001”]
  • Scribe speed (maximum) to 1.0 meter per second;
  • Technology to scribe micro sheet (0.050mm) and various SHAPES including circles, ovals, trapezoids, etc.
  • Multi-Head Scribers with Pattern Recognition with Auto-Align (FAST-24 Series)
  • Rapid setup and minimal maintenance encouraged further sales.

As of June 1999, VPI Customers were operating in 29 countries of the world.
